The Friends of Chesapeake Gateways invites photographers to enter the Star Spangled Banner Geotrail Photo Contest. You must read the following rules, terms and conditions before submitting any photos.

Eligibility

The Star Spangled Banner Geotrail Photo Contest is open to all photographers at least 18 years of age, except employees, relatives of employees and contractors of Friends of Chesapeake Gateways. The contest is open to all participants regardless of residence or citizenship, as the laws of their jurisdiction allow participation. If you are under 18 years of age and would like to submit a photograph, you will have to ask a parent or guardian to do so on your behalf.

All photographs must be taken at sites along the Star-Spangled Banner Geotrail. A list of sites along the Geotrail can be found here.

Image quality of all submitted photos is an important consideration. When submitting please try to upload the highest quality photo that you can. Ideally all submitted photos should have a minimum resolution of 1 megabyte. Flickr™ does limit photo uploads for basic level Flickr™ members (free) to 10 megabytes per photo and 20 megabytes per photo for “Pro” level ($24.95/year) Flickr™ members. Friends reserves the right to exclude photo submissions that may fall below certain basic minimum quality levels.

Rights

An entrant must hold all rights to a photograph he or she submits to the contest.  For a photo in which a person is recognizable, you must complete a model release from the subject or, in the case of a minor, the subject’s parent or guardian. At the bottom of this page is text that can be cut/pasted into a sample form. An image that contains recognizable people will not be selected for an award if the photographer is unable to provide a valid model release upon request.

“Recognizable” means that a third party could identify the individual in the image, due to the visibility of any distinctive physical features, uniform, identification numbers, and so on. Photos that violate or infringe upon another person’s copyright are not eligible.

Individuals submitting photos into the contest retain full rights to their photos, including ownership, but through the act of participation (entering a photo into our contest and tagging those photos with the appropriate contest tags) will also grant to the Friends and our partner, the National Park Service, a non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, and display the submitted photos which might include, by example, methods listed below:

The right to publish the image in any format, including on the web and in print publications or presentations, such as newsletters, brochures, fundraising appeals, public service announcements, grant proposals, reports, awards, thank-you cards, displays, mailings and invitations.

The right to provide images to other individuals and organizations for non-profit, Friends-related use in news stories, newsletters, reports, slide shows, displays, web pages, wayside exhibits and the like.

The right to use the photo’s title, your name, city, state, and country of residence in our publications.

The right to keep the files provided, and to archive the images on CD or in other electronic forms, so that your photos can be used to support our mission and be properly credited.

We reserve sole rights to eliminate and/or delete photographic submissions to our Flickr™ group or content that we deem to be objectionable or of dubious provenance. No prior warning or notification will be required of the Friends.

Types of photos that we would remove without warning:
Photos that showcase dubious taste or themes

Photos involving racial or ethnic insensitivities

Photos involving salacious subjects and presentations

Photos that are unrelated to the Star-Spangled Banner Geotrail

Friends will reserve the rights to change or modify all text associated with a photo entered into the contest. This would include titles of the photo, accompanying descriptions, and tags.
